The United States has a long tradition of producing some of the best essay writers in the world. John McPhee and Thomas Paine are just two of the numerous writers who have contributed to this tradition. We’ll be discussing some of the most well-known writers and their writings.
John McPhee
John McPhee is a respected essayist. His most recent work, “Silk Parachute,” highlights his sophisticated writing, fierce curiosity, and ability to translate complex subjects into a layman’s language. He writes about more personal subjects than the more popular ones, such as his list of bizarre foods he has eaten. The book is divided into two parts, and reads like the layout of a quilt.
While many writers seem to make writing look effortless, McPhee’s work is well-organized and meticulously crafted. He firmly believes that writing requires a certain amount of hard work.
Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet “Common Sense” composed by Thomas Paine, helped to open the way to America’s Revolution. It is widely regarded as the most influential pamphlet in US history. Paine wrote it within 14 months of his arrival in America from England. His writing became controversial and he was arrested, imprisoned and even tried to be executed in France. In his pamphlet, Paine presented a vision of a free and independent America that would serve as a beacon of liberty and an example of popular self-government.
Paine lived the majority of his time in France. His anti-monarchist views caused him to be labeled an outlaw in England. He escaped to France, where he joined the National Convention and was imprisoned for his political activism. While he was in prison, he wrote the first part of “The Age of Reason”.
J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur
During the eighteenth century, a Frenchman named John Hector St. John de Crevecoeur created a stir in Europe through his essay “Letters from an American Farmer.” Crevecoeur wrote about the life of the people living in North America and their differences to Europeans. He was born in Normandy, France, and later settled in New York.
Crevecoeur was the son of a noble French family. He served under Montcalm in the French-Indian War. After completing his military service, he became an itinerant merchant in the English colonies. In 1759, he settled in Orange County, New York. He changed his name to John Hector St. John and continued to write about his new life there. He eventually got married to Mehitable Tippet and settled in a small town in the Province of New York.
Washington Irving
Irving’s writings can be classified into a variety of categories: his satirical writings, his historical writings, and his essays. In addition he was one of the first American literary humorists and established the short-story genre. His works included the first work to use gothic themes.
His works are still popular today and include his classic novels. Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane are two of Irving’s most well-known works. Irving’s most famous essays are based on his own personal experiences. His most popular short stories include “The Scarlet Letter”, “The Specter Bridegroom,” or “The Sketch Book”.
Cynthia Ozick
One of the top living essayists in the US is Cynthia Ozick, who has written seven essay collections and numerous short stories and novels. Her short stories and essays are well-known for their wittiness and moral discipline. She has received numerous awards, including the National Book Critics Circle and the PEN/Faulkner awards. In addition, she has received the Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Ozick was born in Manhattan and has lived in New York City for most of her adult life. She graduated with honors from New York University after attending Hunter College High School. Wallace, a young man was a double major at Amherst College in philosophy and English receiving the highest distinctions in his field. After graduating from college, Wallace went on to attend the University of Arizona and later Harvard University. He struggled with depression and eventually turned to writing.
